How to keep folders up when sorting by name in macOS

by team December 09, 2019

Those who use Mac should know that Finder is our File Manager, and possibly this is one of the best features that I miss most in Windows File Explorer. However, it is finally on the macOS Sierra.

In the case of macOS High Sierra, when we sort a directory by name through the Finder, we can see that the files and folders are arranged side by side according to the alphabetical order of their names, but it is not useful when we have large quantities of files and folders there.

Finder has a function that allows us to keep the folders at the top of a list of directories sorted by name, and once this is configured, all folders will first appear in any directory sorted by name.

macOS allows displaying the contents of folders as in Windows. On this page, we are going to describe the whole process for you.

1. The first thing we should do is open the Finder window.

2. Once the window is open, click on Finder in the top menu bar and choose the Preferences option.

3. In the new window, click on the Advanced tab and check the box that shows “Keep folders on top when sorting by name.”

4. After doing this now you can close the window.

After activating the option from the Finder, you can select to sort any directory by name and we hope you will see all the folders on that directory will appear on the top always.

Surely this option will be helpful for all mac users and who have been Windows users for many years.
